Liquid Image Scuba Series HD320 Diving Video Mask Is Dumbtastic [Diving Camera]

pimg src="http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2009/01/0249_hd-digital-camera-maskb.jpg" width="494" height="345"When I go on my diving vacation at the end of this month, I won't be bringing this video mask. Why anyone would like to attach dumb headlights to vital diving gear is beyond me./p pWhile Liquid Image Scuba Series HD320 is a huge jump over their a href="http://gizmodo.com/336066/liquid-image-camera+mask-lets-you-shoot-video-take-pics-underwater"previous toy-mask/a—reaching 115 feet and capable of capturing 720p video and 5 megapixel photos—didn't anyone tell these people that one of the first rules of scuba diving is not to have objects protruding out of your personal space beyond your tank and BCD?/p pimg src="http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2009/01/0249_underwater-digital-camera.jpg" width="466" height="320" style="display:block;" //p pApparently not. Even if the lamps get off easily in case your mask gets stuck in the coral or some underwater plant, it still looks dangerous and complicated. You can use it without lamps, but then you won't be able to use its features to its full potential. Light and color quickly disappear when you go down. In addition to that, in terms of function you will be limited to the movements of your head as far as angles go./p pIn other words, if you are serious about getting good video or photographs underwater, forget about gimmicks like this and get external equipment. It will be more flexible and safe. Steve Jobs Skips Macworld Because of His Health [Breaking]

pimg src="http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2008/12/steve_jobs_apple.jpg" width="494" height="373" style="display:block;" /a href="http://gizmodo.com/5120687/steve-jobs-health-declining-rapidly-reason-for-macworld-cancellation"Answering recent coverage/a about his health, Steve Jobs has published this letter. Looks like our source was partly right: Jobs' condition was the a reason for his Macworld no-show. But he will get healthier. bUpdated/b/p blockquote pDear Apple Community,/p pbFor the first time in a decade, I'm getting to spend the holiday season with my family, rather than intensely preparing for a Macworld keynote./b/p pUnfortunately, my decision to have Phil deliver the Macworld keynote set off another flurry of rumors about my health, with some even publishing stories of me on my deathbed./p pI've decided to share something very personal with the Apple community so that we can all relax and enjoy the show tomorrow./p pAs many of you know, I have been losing weight throughout 2008. The reason has been a mystery to me and my doctors. A few weeks ago, I decided that bgetting to the root cause of this and reversing it needed to become my #1 priority./b/p pFortunately, after further testing, my doctors think they have found the cause mdash; a hormone imbalance that has been "robbing" me of the proteins my body needs to be healthy. Sophisticated blood tests have confirmed this diagnosis./p pThe remedy for this nutritional problem is relatively simple and straightforward, and bI've already begun treatment./b But, just like I didn't lose this much weight and body mass in a week or a month, bmy doctors expect it will take me until late this Spring to regain it./b I will continue as Apple's CEO bduring my recovery./b/p pI have given more than my all to Apple for the past 11 years now. I will be the first one to step up and tell our Board of Directors if I can no longer continue to fulfill my duties as Apple's CEO. I hope the Apple community will support me in my recovery and know that I will always put what is best for Apple first./p pSo now I've said more than I wanted to say, and all that I am going to say, about this./p pSteve/p /blockquote pWhat does this mean? First and foremost, that his health is inot/i declining rapidly inow/i, as our source affirmed. Thank god for that. Like a href=""I said in the original article/a, I hoped our source was wrong about this point, and it was./p pThe source's information was probably from earlier in the year. While Steve Jobs weight and health was declining during 2008, the doctors "think" they have now found the cause of his declining health. He has "already begun" a "relatively simple and straightforward" treatment. He also says he iis/i recovering./p pThat's excellent news./p pOur source was right that a big part of the reason why Steve Jobs is inot/i doing the Macworld 2009 keynote iis/i his health. The letter above states that he's putting priority #1, his health, ahead of doing the last Macworld Keynote. The truth, as written by Steve Jobs himself, is that he has to recover from a medical condition. He didn't want to put himself through the ordeal of preparing the keynote—the hardest part—and delivering it for two hours. That's why he decided to take time off with his family and keep recovering./p pWhile there are plenty of other reasons why it makes sense to put other executives on stage mdash; to let the public know that there are other capable people leading apple, for one, or because the products this year are not worthy of Steve's presentation mdash; none of them make as much sense as this personal decision. Apple PR muscle tried to mislead the public iagain/i saying that the entire reason was the irrelevance of Macworld. They said they ididn't want to give importance to a show that Apple was pulling away from/i./p pOther media, a href="http://www.cnbc.com/id/28437017"actually only CNBC's Jim Goldman and some followers/a, railed against Gizmodo saying that Steve's health had nothing to do with him not showing up for the Macworld keynote:/p blockquote pbI spoke to Apple after these headlines crossed and the company, which officially doesn't comment on rumors, reiterated the reasons it offered two weeks ago: Apple was pulling out of Macworld because the company didn't see the need to continue its investment in the expo, which included Steve Jobs' keynote./b/p /blockquote pWhile I can understand Apple not telling the truth, perhaps a brilliant journalist and blogging aficionado like Goldman should have known better than trusting Apple's VP of Worldwide Corporate Communications Katie Cotton, specially when a href="http://valleywag.gawker.com/5029459/steve-jobs-admits-katie-cotton-lied-for-him"she lied before/a. On the other side, coming from a guy who writes a href="http://www.cnbc.com/id/22673034/"things like this/a:/p blockquote pAppleTV, take two, has a real shot. The power of technology. The power of Apple and Steve Jobs./p /blockquote pWell, I'm not surprised./p piframe src="http://digg.com/api/diggthis.php?u=http://digg.com/apple/Steve_Jobs_Skips_MacWorld_Because_of_His_Health" align="right" frameborder="0" height="82" scrolling="no" width="55"/iframeAnyway, who cares. I'm happy to know Steve is recovering and happy to know that he's doing fine despite his weight loss and health problems. I'm happy to know that his doctors have discovered the cause now, and he has already begun treatment. I—and everyone at Gizmodo—wish his recovery process goes perfectly well and that this spring he's again in top form./p pbUpdate:/b Apparently Jim Goldman is ikind of/i correcting his previous story on CNBC now. He said that if they he didn't have information that contradicts what Apple is saying, he had to take the company at its word. He's also saying that Steve can be sick but still be able to function as CEO and talking about people who can "easily step in" as CEO: "There are people who can take over, when...if...he decides to leave."/p p[a href="http://gizmodo.com/tag/macworld-2009"Macworld 2009 coverage/a]/p br clear="both" style="clear: both;"/ br clear="both" style="clear: both;"/ a href="http://www.pheedo.com/click.phdo?s=69c5d017cc8343827387236acf06ee38p=1"img alt="" style="border: 0;" border="0" src="http://www.pheedo.com/img.phdo?s=69c5d017cc8343827387236acf06ee38p=1"//a img src="http://www.pheedo.com/feeds/tracker.php?i=69c5d017cc8343827387236acf06ee38" style="display: none;" border="0" height="1" width="1" alt=""/div class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.gawker.com/~f/gizmodo/full?a=A4yuUgkP"img src="http://feedproxy.google.com/~f/gizmodo/full?d=120" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.gawker.com/~f/gizmodo/full?a=GWtX9Vtm"img src="http://feedproxy.google.com/~f/gizmodo/full?d=41" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.gawker.com/~f/gizmodo/full?a=ZxeuD40S"img src="http://feedproxy.google.com/~f/gizmodo/full?i=ZxeuD40S" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.gawker.com/~f/gizmodo/full?a=LoVtrCCC"img src="http://feedproxy.google.com/~f/gizmodo/full?i=LoVtrCCC" border="0"/img/a /divimg src="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/gizmodo/full/~4/PLmqJsWZjs0" height="1" width="1"/

The Alternative to the iPhone Pro [Apple]

The general consensus stands firm on two opposing viewpoints:/p p1. Most people would prefer to have an optional slide-out keyboard,br 2. but don't believe Apple will ever "go backwards" and release anything like this./p pIn response to one comment (Mike) I have created what might be an answer to a third-party product which could solve this dilemma./p /blockquote pActually, not a bad idea at all. It would be even cooler if, instead of being a third-party accessory, Apple actually released a modular iPhone, one that could admit different accessories like these but without the added bulk of building them around the original design. Million Dollar Border Security Machines Fooled with Ten Cent Tape [Biometrics]

pimg src="http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2009/01/33523451_d1313c7721.jpg" width="500" height="346" style="display:block;" /So much for biometrics and immigration security: A South Korean woman managed to fool a million-dollar fingerprint reading machine in Japanese border controls using a simple piece of tape stuck to her fingers./p pIt happened at Tokyo airport. The woman has repeatedly entered Japan using the same trick without anybody noticing. Japanese officials say that they suspect many others have been doing the same things, demonstrating that the biometric systems they installed in 30 airports in 2007—to the tune of $45 million—are completely useless. The woman was deported in July 2007 for illegally staying in Japan as a bar hostess in Nagano, but she entered again with the system, using the tape and a fake passport allegedly provided by a South Korean broker. iPhone 3G Software Unlock Updated, Seems to Work Now [Apple]

pimg src="http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2009/01/new-yellowsn0w.jpg" width="513" height="327" style="display:block;" /The iPhone Dev Team has updated a href="http://gizmodo.com/5121902/iphone-3g-unlock-now-available"yellowsn0w/a, the iPhone 3G software unlock program, to version 0.9.4. It's still a beta, but it has worked for me after some fiddling. Using Vodafone now. iSteam iPhone Steam Simulation App is Amazingly Cool [IPhone Apps]

pobject width="506" height="311" class="left gawkerVideo embeddedVideo"param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/I_EIY3-_HOYhl=enfs=1"/paramparam name="allowFullScreen" value="true"/paramembed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/I_EIY3-_HOYhl=enfs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="506" height="311" class="left gawkerVideo"/embed/objectI have almost no apps in my iPhone, only the most useful ones for NYC. But iSteam, a steam simulator, looks like a fun one to install and keep./p pAs you can see in the video, the application adds ultra-realistic steam to your screen when you blow on the microphone./p pAfter that you can use your fingers to clean it, causing squeaky sounds, condensation, and drops that get affected by the orientation of the phone, like it would happen in real life. But without frying your iPhone. It's silly. It's useless. It iwas/i a must get iwhen it was free/i. Now that it is $0.99, I'd think about it. /p pKostas Eleftheriou—one of the guys who does the app—says that iSteam will be free until the weekend, but there has been a problem with Apple's iTunes App store backoffice software. I still see it as $0.99, but some people are reporting is back to free.
