Don't forget kids, Apple (and our main man a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PhilSchiller/"Phil Schiller/a) will be doing its final Macworld thing live and direct come Tuesday morning, and as usual, we'll be there doing what we do: liveblogging the hell out of it. div align="left"That's right -- it's a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/CES/"CES/a time again at Engadget! It goes without saying that this is one of the most exciting events of the year for us, as CES presents an almost unyielding vista of new gadgetry to play with. We'll be covering all the news you could possibly hope for (and then some), including press conferences, keynote addresses, and lots and lots (and lots!) of hands-on encounters with every piece of new tech we can find. You can be sure we'll be updating the site minute-to-minute as the news flows in.br /br /You can view the news in the regular format that you're used to here on the front page, or you can head over to a href="http://ces.engadget.com"strongces.engadget.com/strong/a, where the stories are presented in shortened versions so you can see more of what's breaking. We've also reorganized the sidebar to the right to keep you informed on all the biggest stories, and there's a ticker on top of it that'll let you see what event is up next.br /br /So sit back, relax, and get ready for the craziest few days in consumer electronics you'll ever see. We had a chance to sit down with VIA's VP of sales and marketing, Richard Brown, earlier today to discuss the finer points of the company's position in the marketplace. While it was a intriguing conversation (mostly about the state of netbook and smartphone CPUs in 2009), our eye was caught by a prototype netbook he'd brought with him. The 'book in question is a Nano-driven model that will be sold under the "Dr. Mobile" brand name and dubbed the "FreeStyle." The system boasts a 1.3GHz CPU (which can be clocked to 1.6GHz), runs atop the VX800 chipset, features an 11.6-inch (1366 x 768) display, a proper trackpad with two real buttons, and sports 802.11b/g, Bluetooth, and optional onboard mobile broadband. Besides having a truly healthy amount of screen real estate for such a small display, the laptop was surprisingly stylish and lightweight -- a welcome change from the stream of generic netbooks we've seen as of late. The company expects it to clock in at $500 when it hits around February, and says that the CPU outperforms similarly-spec'd Atom chips, with decent support for Vista. We should see a working model on the floor at CES, so keep your eyes peeled for a followup. For now, enjoy the hands-on!br /div class="postgallery"pstrongGallery: a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nano-powered-freestyle-netbook-hands-on/"Nano-powered "FreeStyle" netbook hands-on/a/strong/pa href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nano-powered-freestyle-netbook-hands-on/1258532/"img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/01/viadr01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" //aa href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nano-powered-freestyle-netbook-hands-on/1258533/"img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/01/viadr02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" //aa href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nano-powered-freestyle-netbook-hands-on/1258534/"img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/01/viadr03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" //aa href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nano-powered-freestyle-netbook-hands-on/1258539/"img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/01/viadr04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" //aa href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nano-powered-freestyle-netbook-hands-on/1258540/"img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/01/viadr05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" //a/divpFiled under: a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag"Laptops/a/pp style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/05/nano-powered-freestyle-netbook-hands-on/"Nano-powered "FreeStyle" netbook hands-on/a originally appeared on a href="http://www.engadget.com"Engadget/a on Mon, 05 Jan 2009 16:19:00 EST. Did you accidentally flip the switch on that OTA update to a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/RC30/"RC30/a on your G1 and currently find yourself stuck with a non-root lifestyle? Well thanks to forum member chavonbravo over at xda-developers, things are about to get awesome for you. You can now revert back to a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/RC29/"RC29/a with ease by snagging the uploaded image, renaming, copying to your microSD card, and running through standard procedure for re-flashing the phone. We can attest that the hack does indeed work, so feel free to proceed. Word to the wise, though: getting up to a modded RC30 isn't as easy as some might have you believe, so set aside a little time to walk through the steps (check out a href="http://www.modmygphone.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page#Modding_Guides"ModMyGPhone's guide page/a for clear instructions).br /br /[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]pFiled under: a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag"Cellphones/a/pp style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/01/leaked-g1-firmware-lets-you-revert-to-rc29/"Leaked G1 firmware lets you revert to RC29/a originally appeared on a href="http://www.engadget.com"Engadget/a on Thu, 01 Jan 2009 22:26:00 EST. Well, the year has come and gone, and with it, our 365 -- or in this case, 366 -- days of posting. We've seen some pretty amazing stuff, gotten to play with a stack of awesome gear, and watched the site grow by leaps and bounds (we just had our biggest day ever in October). We thought we'd cap the year off with a look back at the posts that got the most heat. One thing that's clear? People really love (or hate) Apple. Check out the top 20 of the year below, and be sure to truck over to a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/12/31/engadget-mobiles-top-posts-2008/"Engadget Mobile/a and a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/12/31/engadget-hds-top-posts-2008/"Engadget HD/a for their year-end round-ups!br /br /Top 20 most trafficked posts of 2008 (in order)br /br /

An Apple patent unearthed by emMac Rumors/em named emSwipe Gestures for Touch Screen Keyboards/em suggests a future direction the company might be taking which would substantially change interaction with devices like the iPhone. According to the document, the new system would allow for simple finger gestures like swipes to the left or right to control basic functions of text editing. Some movements outlined in the application include a left swipe for deletion of characters, right swipes for a space, and a swipe down in place of the return key. Of course, these types of gestures are nothing new (and frankly, nothing patentable we suspect), as applications on the company's own devices -- namely the jailbreak-only a href="http://code.google.com/p/mobileterminal/wiki/TipsAndTricks"MobileTerminal/a -- feature almost this exact implementation of gesture control, and Microsoft has had a similar (albeit stylus-based) concept in WinMo for years. Still, adding in this functionality to the software's existing tools would likely improve navigation and input, and opens the door for solutions to the lingering (and annoying) copy / paste problems Apple seems to have.br /br /[Via a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2008/12/25/multi-touch-swipe-gestures-for-iphone-keyboard/"Mac Rumors/a]pFiled under: a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag"Cellphones/a/pp style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/26/apple-files-patent-for-gesture-based-text-editing/"Apple files patent for gesture-based text editing/a originally appeared on a href="http://www.engadget.com"Engadget/a on Fri, 26 Dec 2008 10:58:00 EST. We hope that when you awoke today and made your bleary-eyed trip to the tree, you ended up unwrapping some of the fine, fine gadgets that we're always showing off. Sure, you're happy to be spending time with your family, and you're just enjoying the season of giving for it's totally non-commercial, traditional reasons -- but we'd like to know if you made out like a bandit or not. Tell us what you did (or didn't) get in the comments below, and one more time... enjoy those 50 kids freaking the hell out over getting a Wii.br /br /When you're done, check out what people got excited about in a href="http://www.engadget.com/2004/12/25/howd-you-do/"2004/a, a href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/12/25/so-whatd-you-get/"2005/a, a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/25/so-whatd-you-get/"2006/a, and a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/25/so-whatd-you-get/"2007/a.pa href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/25/so-whatd-you-get/" rel="bookmark"Continue reading emSo, what'd you get?/em/a/ppFiled under: a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gadgets/" rel="tag"Misc. Loose lips sink ships, Sony -- not that you'd care. Apparently the company couldn't stand to wait any longer on that long netbook it had been teasing, so it's gone and leaked it out onto the sonystyle site. Apparently, the oddly shaped P-series device will sport an 8-inch, 1600 x 786 LED display, a 1.33GHz Intel CPU, a hard drive up to 60GB (or a 128GB SSD), and will run Vista Home Premium or Home Basic. There's not much else in the way of info, save for the fact that the laptop will be available in three colors (Crimson Red, Champagne Gold, and Black Silk). Not quite the heart-stopper we were hoping for, and knowing Sony, likely not real netbook-ily priced, but still an interesting entry to the ever-widening field of teensy computers. Now if only it ran Linux...br /br /strongUpdate:/strong In case it wasn't clear, that's not an image of the P series, but a TT -- obviously a placeholder for now.br /br /[Via a href="http://jkontherun.com/2008/12/25/sonys-netbook-fits-in-a-pocket-might-not-fit-netbook-category/"jkOnTheRun/a; Thanks to everyone who sent this in]pFiled under: a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag"Laptops/a/pp style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/25/sony-p-series-netbook-unveiled-underwhelming/"Sony P-series "netbook" unveiled, underwhelming/a originally appeared on a href="http://www.engadget.com"Engadget/a on Thu, 25 Dec 2008 10:33:00 EST. Not too much to ask for, right? You'd think, but all I ended up with was constant swapping between 3 (or more) devices, hoping to find some balance of features that worked for me. Instead of one "go to" phone, I juggled the iPhone 3G, T-Mobile G1, and BlackBerry Bold for the last few months, desperately wishing I could merge them into one perfect device. I shall now break down my hopes for the upcoming year, with a prayer in my little old heart that manufacturers are listening.pa href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/24/editorial-all-i-wanted-this-year-was-the-best-smartphone-ever/" rel="bookmark"Continue reading emEditorial: All I wanted this year was the best smartphone ever/em/a/ppFiled under: a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag"Cellphones/a/pp style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/24/editorial-all-i-wanted-this-year-was-the-best-smartphone-ever/"Editorial: All I wanted this year was the best smartphone ever/a originally appeared on a href="http://www.engadget.com"Engadget/a on Wed, 24 Dec 2008 18:00:00 EST.
